The University of Dallas Women’s Basketball team was on the road this past weekend for two conference games, facing off against Centenary College and Austin College. Unfortunately for the Crusaders, they were not able to get the results they wanted.

Against Centenary, the Crusaders kept it close through the first quarter but allowed the opponents a scoring run that increased their lead. The score at halftime was 37-21 in favor of Centenary.

The Crusaders played much better in the second half of the game, even outscoring Centenary. However, the gap that emerged in the first half seemed to be too much for the Crusaders to overcome, and every time they would begin to narrow the lead, Centenary would score enough to keep a comfortable distance. The final score was 78-64.

One positive occurrence for the Crusaders was a career high performance from freshman forward Vanessa Diaz, who scored 23 points. Senior forward Michelle DeCoud contributed 16 points. Fellow senior forward Helen Onyenso led the team in rebounds with 9.

Though the Crusaders were looking to bounce back the following day, they were faced with a difficult task, having to play against the first place Kangaroos of Austin College.

It was a rough game from beginning to end. The Kangaroos took a 16-0 lead to start the game, and never looked back.

It was 49-16 at the half, and the final score was 83-33. DeCoud led the team with 10 points and 8 rebounds. Onyenso added 7 points and an additional 8 rebounds.

“I think we need to improve on our energy and working together as a team,” Onyenso said about how the Crusaders could bounce back and finish the season on a high note. “Sometimes it feels like it’s just five different people on the court instead of one team, so if we can really come together as a team and bring the energy on the court, I think we can finish strong.”

When asked what the Crusaders needed to change, DeCoud offered a simple solution: “Scoring, and then not letting the other team score more.”

UD is eager to put this game behind them. They will have the opportunity this weekend, playing at home in a couple conference matches. The first match is Friday against Trinity University. Tip off is at 7:30 pm.
