Men’s lacrosse begins 2018 season

The University of Dallas men’s lacrosse team began the 2018 campaign Saturday afternoon with a loss to Huntingdon College of Alabama. The Crusaders fell 10-5.

The game began with the Crusaders on the back foot as Huntingdon College took a 6-1 lead at halftime. Sophomore midfielder, Tyler Smith, scored the lone goal of the first half for the Crusaders off an assist by Peter Early.

The Crusaders matched the Huntingdon College Hawks in the second half, with each team netting four goals. The Hawks scored early into the third quarter, but the Crusaders responded with a goal of their own from freshman midfielder Jake Frederick.

The fourth quarter saw the Hawks score three goals and UD responded with three goals of their own. Smith notched his second goal of the game at the 8:31 mark off an assist by Frederick. With 5:06 left in the game, Early scored from an assist by J.P. Hasson. The Crusaders’ fifth goal was scored by freshmen attacker Chasen Reynolds. Smith provided the assist on the goal.

UD was outshot 30-19 throughout the game. Christian Lopez played all 60 minutes in net for the Crusaders, recording nine saves.

The Crusaders are looking forward to their next match with hopes of earning their first win of the season.

With the season just beginning, there is plenty of optimism among the team.

“I’m most looking forward to seeing my team progress and becoming better after each game we play,” Early said.

In order to get that win, Hasson said, “the biggest thing we can do is really slow things down on offense. Our defense played really well, but on offense we didn’t take time to let good opportunities develop, and as a result we turned the ball over a good amount.”

The Crusaders return to action on Sunday, Feb. 18 at 1 p.m. on their home field where they will take on the Sabres of Marian University.

“I think if our defense plays the way that they did on Saturday, and we are patient on offense, we’ll come away with a win,” said Hasson.
