The University of Dallas golf team will open their fall season on Sept. 10 and 11, competing at the John Bohmann Memorial Invitational hosted by Texas Lutheran University in Seguin, Texas.

Senior Thomas Schuberg was asked about his expectations for the 2018 season.

“[I am] excited for the upcoming season, especially with all the returning sophomores and the incoming freshmen class,” Schuberg said. “There’s a lot of talent in this group, but we just need to actualize our potential in tournaments.”

This year’s golf team is comprised of eight members, six of which are experienced returning players and two of which are freshmen. Schuberg, the team’s only senior, and his fellow teammates are all eager to begin the season and continue broadening respect for the program by lowering the overall team score at tournaments as well as representing the team in a proper manner in the classroom.

“We have a very good roster with a lot [of] talent,” Head Coach Garrett Smith said. “We aren’t quite as young as we were last year, and I believe that we can put that experience to good use and avoid some of the mistakes that we made last year.”

This past spring season the UD men’s golf team finished in fourth place at the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) tournament, which is the best result in program history. Smith, albeit happy that records were broken last season, sees greater potential in this year’s team.

“[I] believe that there is enough talent on this team to not only challenge for a conference title, but to be nationally competitive as well,” Smith said. However, it will not be a simple task.

“Our key will be believing that [we are good enough to challenge for a conference title] and avoiding some of the mistakes that have hindered that progress in the past,” Smith said.

Nevertheless, Smith wants to avoid raising expectations for the success of the team this season. Instead, he plans to focus on helping the players improve their skills every day.

“If we are able to do that, then I know that this team will be tough to beat week in and week out,” Smith added.
