The University of Dallas men’s golf team competed in the West Region Invitational last Monday and Tuesday, April 1 and 2, at the Berry Creek Club in Georgetown, Texas. The two-day tournament was the fourth tournament the Crusaders have competed in this spring and their second 54-hole tournament in a row.

“This past week was a bit bizarre, said head coach Garrett Smith. “We played quite well for the majority of the event. Actually, probably well enough to win the event. We just allowed some big numbers to kind of cloud our scorecards.”

After the first 18 holes on day one, the Crusaders shot 308 as a team and ended the day in 6th place as they were eight strokes behind 5th place Howard Payne University and five strokes ahead of Belhaven University. At the end of day one, Dallas had a 36-hole score of 611 which moved them ahead of Howard Payne for 5th place.

UD was one of four Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) teams that attended the tournament, along with Texas Lutheran University (TLU), Centenary College of Louisiana, and host Southwestern University. Of the four other SCAC teams, UD finished third after day one, behind Southwestern’s A team and TLU and ahead Southwestern’s B team and Centenary.

Sophomore Robby Evans led the Crusaders after day one with a two-round score of 147, which tied him for 6th place with Hardin-Simmons University’s Luke Smith and Nebraska Wesleyan University’s Alex Kubik. Sophomore Emilio Montalvo shot 76 strokes in both first day rounds for a total score of 152.  Montalvo’s 152 was tied him for 15th with Centenary’s Reed Balcerowicz.

“Both Robby and Emilio carried the load for us,” said Smith. “So it was certainly nice to get them back on track after a rough week the week before in California.”

The Crusaders repeated their second round score of 303 in the third and final round on Tuesday. UD finished with a final 54-hole score of 914. Dallas moved up to 4th place out of the 9 teams competing in the tournament, passing Hardin-Simmons who ended with a score of 919.

UD remained in the same position they ended day one in relative to the other SCAC teams. Southwestern edge out TLU by one stroke to win the tournament 888 to 889. Southwestern’s B team tied with Hardin-Simmons for 5th, and Centenary finished last with a score of 966

Evans shot a third round score of 78 while Montalvo shot 73. Both Evans and Montalvo tied 8th place overall along with Smith, Nebraska Wesleyan’s Christian Hall and Christopher Cheney from Southwestern all with scores of 225 strokes.

“[We’re] looking to take the positives from this event, learn from the mistakes and hopefully have a good result both next week in Memphis and the following at SCAC.

The Crusaders continue their season in the Rhodes Collegiate Spring Classic on Monday and Tuesday, April 15 and 16, in Memphis, Tenn. The tournament will be played at the Windyke Country Club hosted by Rhodes College. The Rhodes Collegiate Spring Classic will be UD final tune up before the SCAC Championship tournament.
