The University of Dallas volleyball team went 2-2 this weekend with three thrilling five-game sets. This puts their overall record at 15-18, and the conference record at 8-9. With this new record the team will now be able to compete in the NCAA SCAC tournament.

The first game of the weekend was a spectacular win against Texas Lutheran University. The girls took the games to five sets and battled for every point. They won every other set until coming through and winning the final set 15-12. They had a very strong offense with 56 kills total. It was just what the girls needed to kick off the weekend.

Although the Lady Crusaders lost the next two matches against Johnson & Wales University and Trinity University, they fought valiantly for every point and took Johnson & Wales to five sets. These two losses put those watching at home on the edge of their seats, wondering if they would get into the SCAC tournament. The girls came back with a strong win against St. Thomas to place them into the SCAC tournament.

“Going into this weekend we knew it would be big and went in with the mind set we needed to come out strong and focus on our side first and we were able to pull through and do it,” said sophomore Isabel Garcia.

The team is now ranked sixth in the SCAC league, and if they win the game on Tuesday, they will secure fifth place. Winning Tuesday’s game will tie UD with Texas Lutheran University, and in that case the placement will come down to how many points each team won during the season.

“We are excited for SCAC and can’t wait to give it our all on the court” said sophomore Dayjah Whyte when asked about the upcoming tournament. This will be the second year in a row the team has placed a spot in the SCAC tournament, which is a big deal for the seniors.

“Being able to compete in the SCAC tournament as a senior is really important to me. It’s the seniors’ last chance to show everyone what we can do and to show how far we’ve come from freshman year” said senior Krystyn Pua. The SCAC tournament will be the weekend of Nov. 8, and will take place at Texas Lutheran University. It will be an exciting end to this year’s 2019 season.

“As a team we’ve worked hard all season so it’s super exciting to say we earned a place in the SCAC tournament. With [that] being said we are ready to go all out with these next two weeks and compete to the best of our ability,” said freshman, Larissa Ramirez.
