Due to delays from COVID-19, the University of Dallas women’s softball team had a late but promising start to their season.

When asked about the challenges COVID-19 has posed to the softball team, Freshman Devinne Green (Riverside, Calif.) replied that, “Covid has impacted [me] a lot [and] after not playing a whole year and trying to go out and perform was really challenging.”

The Crusaders were originally scheduled to open their season by playing McMurry University on Feb. 21, but the games were unfortunately cancelled.

On March 6-7, the University of Dallas women’s softball team played their first games. Southwestern University challenged the Crusaders in three conference games in Georgetown, Texas.

On Saturday, March 6, the Crusaders played a doubleheader against the Pirates. Although the Crusaders were defeated in all three games, they fought hard. The first game was close, with the Pirates edging the Crusaders 2-1. However, the Crusaders managed to outhit the Pirates 7-6.

The second game against the Pirates concluded with a final score of 8-0. According to the U.D. Athletics page covering the second game, “Dallas was limited to three hits, all by hitter spots: 2, 3, and 4 in the lineup. Madison Coutts [sophomore], Annabel Anderson [sophomore], and [Brenna] Kelly [freshman] had the game knocks for the [Crusaders].”

The final game of the weekend closed with a final score of 19-3. Although the loss was hard, Brenna Kelly [freshman] hit her first collegiate home run, which led  the Crusaders to their three runs.

Freshman Devinne Green, who pitches for the Crusaders, is hopeful for the remainder of the season and believes that her team will continue to grow and succeed with the support from the coaching staff and through teamwork. She said, “I feel like our team has the potential [to] do well and our coach pushes us and wants the best for us.”

The Dallas Crusaders are set to play their next games against Austin College on the weekend of March 20-21.
