Looking for new music? The Backseat Lovers’ “When We Were Friends” is an album worth listening to! Perfect for a chill study day, a long drive or just a piece of good music to listen to as you make your way across campus to your next class, The Backseats Lovers’ album holds a variety of rock, upbeat and mesmerizing audio that captures the listeners’ attention in the best way.

The Backseat Lovers is an indie alt-rock band. Consisting of four members, with Joshua Harmon at lead vocals/guitar, Jonas Swanson at lead guitar/backup vocals, KJ Ward at bass guitar and Juice Welch at drums and background vocals. The band was founded by the members themselves in Salt Lake City, Utah.

“When We Were Friends” was released in January 2019 and is composed of nine songs that have a wide variety of upbeat and downtempo tunes. The album runs 37 minutes long and includes a range of energetic guitar solos to mellow beats accompanied by smooth vocals.

The first track, titled “Watch Your Mouth” kicks off the album. The song starts slow and then transitions into a strong melody sustained by strong guitar playing. I find this song’s strong lyricism, vocal delivery and guitar presence to be especially impressive.

The second track, “Pool House,” is a slower song that has yet again impressive electric guitar vibrations and accented notes. The vocals and slow-tempo drumming included in this track complement each other very well, creating a compelling melody. This song is just one example of the band’s ability to deliver headbangers, but also calming heartfelt music.

The fourth track, “Kilby Girl,” which is presumably the most popular song on the album after it went viral on TikTok, begins with an upbeat tempo and driving drums. It then transitions into an overwhelming combination of upbeat drums, passionate guitar and strong vocals. The song’s overall melody and lyricism indicate a light and carefree mood. It also includes an alluring transition into one of the best guitar solos on the album. “Kilby Girl” is absolutely a song anyone can bust out some serious dance moves to.

The third track “Intuition,” the fifth track “Dugout” and the last track “Sinking Ship” are all relaxed songs that anyone would enjoy listening to while studying or driving. They have a smooth sound throughout that embraces soft and easy listening.

The sixth track “Davy Crochet” is an upbeat song that has the groovy leading guitar, relaxed vocals and an all in all a fun melody. “Maple Syrup,” the seventh track on the album, is yet again another upbeat song, whose harmony, lyricism and guitar playing electrifies the album once again.

The band’s use of both electric and acoustic guitar in some of their songs works so well that they unexpectedly complement each other. Dynamic transitions from calm to powerful melodies emphasize the band’s ability to produce a wide variety just within one song. It is impressive, but the fact that they include this dynamism consistently throughout the whole album is why one might consider it to be a great compilation of music. If you are a fan of alternative music or indie rock, then this music just might be perfect for you.

If you find liking to this album, and the band grabs your interest, then good news! The Backseat Lovers also just released their new album “Waiting to Spill” just last week on Oct. 28. Go take a listen, for it is good music worth sharing!
