Every February, people around the world celebrate Valentine’s Day, a holiday dedicated to love. But what about those who don’t believe in Valentine’s Day or don’t have a valentine? Look no further than Galentine’s Day, a day for women to celebrate their friendships.
Galentine’s Day originated from the TV comedy Parks and Recreation. In the episode “Galentine’s Day”, which aired in 2010, the main character Leslie Knolpe spends time with her girlfriends to celebrate their friendship.
Galentine’s Day was created in an attempt to rebel from the conventions of Valentine’s Day.
The holiday spread thanks to social media, and women liked the idea of a day dedicated to commemorating their female friendships. So, Galentine’s Day took off in real life.
Galentine’s Day is celebrated on the day before Valentine’s Day, Feb. 13th. So even if you have a valentine this year, you can still celebrate it!
Whether you plan to celebrate Valentine’s Day or not, Galentine’s Day gives women the chance to step away from the commercialization of Valentine’s Day and focus on their supportive female friendships instead.
Although some may find it silly, Galentine’s Day serves as an important reminder to express gratitude for your friends. With classes, jobs and social events taking up the majority of students’ time, friendships sometimes go underappreciated.
It can be tough to balance school responsibilities and social life at UD. Galentine’s Day offers the perfect opportunity for a break to celebrate the friendships that support you.
There is no right or wrong way to celebrate Galentine’s Day, but it can be fun to do something special! You might try a gift exchange between your friends, or a homemade brunch, which is how Leslie Knople celebrates it in the show.
However, Galentine’s Day doesn’t have to be a full-fledged celebration. The goal is to show your friends how much they mean to you. The best ‘gift’ might be having a Mass said or offering up your Communion intention for them.
No matter how you decide to celebrate, take some time this Galentine’s Day to show appreciation for your gals!
