A Knightly Legacy at UD

The university welcomes a new shield of faith in the Knights of Columbus

As this semester’s challenges loom, a brotherly band arises: The Knights of Columbus. The Grand Knight Vincent Pavese cut some time from his schedule to speak with me. He said the Knights are “…an order founded in the 1800s by Fr. Michael McGivney [that was] called to fight for religious freedom, especially in the early times of America.”

An ancient and holy banner, the Knights are a Catholic brotherhood changing the world one action at a time. To be a Knight in today’s world is to “…stand up for the Faith with honor,” Vincent said. It is a call to action, a call to be courageous and a witness to Jesus Christ and a way to engage with charity and fraternity in your own life.

Brought back from many years ago, the Knights have their goals even at the resurrection of the organization. Pavese said the Knights aim “…to become a fraternal, faithful order of the school, [looking] to improve the school and the neighborhood around us.” Collaborating with other organizations, the Knights will take up service, fundraising, and fraternal growth throughout the year.

Service includes group activities that benefit the surrounding community. From the cleanup of the sports fields to collecting food donations or fundraising for social or community events, the Knights hope to be active in charity to the University and its people.

Internally, the Knights is a deeply fraternal organization with both team-building and spiritual events. Adoration, prayer, and activities both off- and on-campus are essential to fostering camaraderie and building up the hope and virtue of its members. Pavese said “we have spread throughout the country and even throughout the world… truly a fraternal group that is calling others to the faith. It’s a call to action.” In every council, in the parish’s need, the Knights are there to step up and face challenges head-on. They must be “…willing to defend your faith against those who might question it.”

As of right now, the Grand Knight said “…we’re trying to get it off the ground, to work with other groups – Saint Joseph Society, Blessed Is She, etc.” Collaboration will be key – it will provide the Knights with opportunities to band together for an external cause, a crucial part of their mission. Those looking for resources in their spiritual or community-facing events can look to the Knights for support.

Joining the Knights is not a challenge. Pavese said “you don’t need to fight a lion… the requirements are that you have received all your sacraments, you are above the age of 18, and you are in good standing with the Church and the Knights.” From a Freshman to our very own choir director, any men who seek to get involved and join the crusade are welcome. Pavese said “Anyone looking to expand their faith amongst their fellow brothers, I believe the Knights of Columbus is a phenomenal place to start.”

On the University of Dallas’ campus, access to real faith-based and active organizations is an incredible blessing. If you seek to put on the armor of God and carry your cross, connect with Dcn. Ryan Sales or Grand Knight Vincent Pavese.
