Galentines is a great tradition for celebrating and showing love to your friends. Gals before pals! Sisters before misters!

What is Galentine’s Day? Oftentimes, this spinoff of Valentine’s Day is overshadowed by the larger holiday, which focuses mainly on romantic relationships. Not to say that Valentine’s Day celebrates that exclusively, but romantic relationships are the spotlight. However, Galentine’s Day provides a fresh perspective on what love is.

Love, very simply, is willing the good of the other, and the foundation of love is friendship. Friendships are one of the pillars of a well-lived life. This holiday is focused on highlighting friendship (specifically female friendships, hence “gal-antine”) and fully appreciating the special love communicated through it.

Where did this idea originate? Galentine’s Day, celebrated Feb. 13, became a reality through the comedy show Parks and Recreation, starring Amy Poehler as Leslie Knope. The celebration was depicted as gal-friends getting together to share a festive brunch and community.

But this is just the beginning — there is so much more to enjoy. Some ideas — a day of pampering at a salon, wine and chocolate, exchanging gifts or a dance party…

Why is Galentine’s Day important? It is important because of the reminder that good female friendships are worth celebrating. Friends are the people you surround yourself with who help you become the person you were meant to be. It is an opportunity to show gratitude for the love that you do have for your friends.
