The University of Dallas is a special place, and students often come for two main reasons: the incredible education and the genuine community. At UD, community is found in the shared academic and spiritual lives of students, through which they strive to live virtuous lives. But however good, true, beautiful and important these are, true community is not complete without a very key element. Namely, fun.

There are many on-campus activities and clubs that embody the school spirit and various events put on by the dormitories. Even so, many students prefer to seek fun and relaxation in off-campus locations. After interviewing a variety of students, from freshmen to seniors, there are three places in particular that stand out as being unique parts of off-campus culture and community.

First, there is “Cuppa,” a vibrant and enjoyable coffee shop located a mere fifteen minutes away in Irving Bible Church. Students agreed this was the ultimate coffee shop hangout spot, specifically citing the fact that it offers half-off drinks on Fridays!

Although coffee shops do provide that peaceful atmosphere which allows students to relax after a long week, some people prefer a more energetic setting. You guessed it. Dancing. The next most popular hangout places for students were “Billy Bob’s” and “Red River.” Between these two western-themed nightclubs, students can find a variety of music genres and dancing styles. Where else would you find places like this–but in Texas? Students agree these places are staples of off-campus community and culture. Sophomore Deedee Herrington had this to say about these places, “They are full of a fun atmosphere which fosters friendships and allows you to have a break from the rigorous academics of everyday life through the energy of dance.”

The last place most commonly cited was “The Dallas Arboretum.” What better place to foster community than in nature? It is a beautiful outdoor space that offers a chance for the busyness of academics to (momentarily) take a back seat, giving students an opportunity to revel in nature and good companionship.

These places all offer something similar but in their own distinctive ways. For some students, it is enough to revel in the beauty of nature or relax quietly with a cup of coffee. Yet, there are others who more fully unwind in a more upbeat environment. Whatever the case may be, there is something for everyone.
