Dear students, faculty and staff of the University of Dallas,

The time has come for the editors of The Cor Chronicle to say their goodbyes to the UD community in this our last issue of the spring semester. Although I have only served one year as the news editor (otherwise known as the assistant to the regional manager; I prefer assistant regional manager), I have spent a sizable portion of my UD life with The Cor Chronicle, dating all the way back to my first moments as a freshman.

My first fall semester, I worked as a staff writer for the sports section, with Emily Grant as my editor, to whom I owe a special thanks for getting me the opportunity to write for the news section at various points in the semester. I also want to thank Rudy Bush, who was a great advisor who always challenged me to be a better writer.

By the beginning of the spring semester, I was writing for the news section as a staff writer, and I remained in that position through my junior year, serving at various points under Kate Frediani, Emmanuel Rame and, finally, the legend Timothy Roberts, to whom I owe a special thanks for his mentorship and friendship, and who passed on the mantle of news editor to myself, in which position I have served during my senior year.

Suffice it to say, I have been with the paper my entire UD life, and I will miss The Cor Chronicle. I leave the position of news editor in the hands of Beatrice Ellison, who has done fine work for the paper as a writer ,and I have no doubt she will fill the position very well.

Throughout this semester, I have been very proud of the standard we have set for ourselves in keeping all news articles as unbiased and objective as possible. We may not be a publication like The New York Times, but at least we strive to be objective in our reporting. Thank you to all my writers who have continually worked for excellence in their writing.

I would like to send a special thanks to Dr. Jonathan Sanford and Clare Venegas for their dedication in meeting with the paper to provide comments, updates and feedback for The Cor Chronicle. It is greatly appreciated.

I would also like to thank all faculty and students who helped us in the writing of articles through their comments, quotes and willingness to be interviewed. Thank you.

Thank you to the amazing newspaper staff, without whom this work is truly impossible. A special thanks to our layout editors, Peter James, Joseph Michel, Jake Harper and Elizabeth Littell for their hard work. Monday night layouts were a blast.

Perhaps the greatest thanks goes to Thérèse Castillo, our editor-in-chief (otherwise known as the regional manager), who has handled her role with efficiency and grace, and who has made working for The Cor Chronicle this year an even greater experience than it was in the past (although if I could have successfully orchestrated a coup, I would have).

Lastly, I want to thank all my friends. In my time at UD, I have not been the most social person, but the friends I have made I cherish. To all those people, thank you for your presence in my life. Y’all are the best.

Graduation will soon be upon us, and I’m not sure exactly how I feel about it. I know I will miss UD, The Cor Chronicle, my professors and my friends, and it might hurt for a while. But regardless, I am truly happy that this is where I spent four years of my life. And to the next regime of The Cor Chronicle, good luck, and take care of this paper.

Adios amigos,

Max Hastreiter
