UD’s Greatest Event?
The greatest free event that UD organizes is the Student & Faculty Happy Hour! It is one of the best times to grab free food, free beer and have great conversations with friends and faculty.
With the busy workload from academics and the full social calendar that so many UD students balance, it can be hard sometimes to slow down on the weekdays and enjoy an afternoon beer with friends. But that is what makes this Student & Faculty Happy Hour such a great opportunity for the UD community.
But don’t just take my word that this is a great event. Hear it from the students and faculty who love it!
Leah Lopez, a junior philosophy major, runs the happy hour events as part of her job as the CAB academics intern. Lopez said that during her freshman year she didn’t even know what the happy hours were, or that they were open to students.
Lopez said, “It’s a great way to know your professors and hear their hot takes on random topics. It is a good reminder that professors aren’t distant omniscient mentors, but real people with senses of humor and favorite foods.”
When asked what he thought about the event, Fr. Thomas Esposito, O. Cist., an associate professor of theology, said, “Koinonia. It’s Biblical. Look it up.”
Dr. Kevin Kambo, an associate professor of Philosophy at UD, said, “It is a great way to connect not just students with faculty, but also with each other. The Happy Hour gives a planned time and place, but it keeps it informal.”
From UD’s art history department, Associate Professor Dr. Estelle Fonteneau attended the event for the first time this past Thursday. She said that she was unsure of what the event would be like, but was pleasantly surprised as she was able to meet a fellow professor whom she has never met before.
Joseph Sacco, senior English major, said, “I like having a beer with my friends, and appreciate the opportunity to socialize with the professors. If we could get more professors to come, it would be even better. Sometimes it can be hard to flag them down because so many students come.”
Christi Bales, senior English major, said, “It’s a good break in the middle of our busy schedules where we get to connect. The free food and the opportunity to share a conversation with a friend over drinks is great.”
When asked how the happiness of the hour could be improved, Elizabeth Rudolph, yet another senior English major, simply said, “I would increase the hours.”
Eleanor Bostick, senior Italian major, said, “It’s really great to have an event to go to for both students and faculty immediately after afternoon classes. It takes off the pressure of having to plan an event, so that you can just enjoy going to it.”
Whether you need an excuse for a study break, want to see the Dumb Ox fulfilling its telos or you just enjoy good conversation, head down to the next Faculty Social Hour. Keep an eye out for the announcement on Moey’s emails, or student GroupMe chats. The event is usually every other Thursday from 4:30 p.m-6 p.m.
As we all get ready for Groundhog Day, let’s remember to stop and smell the roses as we make our way through the semester. Take the time, and seize the opportunity, have a beer and chat with friends and professors. Remember the food and drinks are FREE!
