The Cor Chronicle is a true labor of love with a huge team that works to put it together every week. I was extremely privileged to interview each of the editors of the Cor to get their perspectives on journalism, editing, and more.
Mary Cavanna, Photo Editor
Senior English Major with Painting Concentration
What is your favorite thing about being a photography editor?
I just love a job well done when it comes to photos! The photos are usually the first thing that people see with the newspaper, so I want to make sure they represent the articles well.
What is your most random hobby?
I like to make small rats with fancy hats out of clay.
Sam Korkus, Commentary Editor
Senior English Major
What is your favorite thing about being the commentary editor?
As the Commentary Editor, I get to work with writers to put interesting opinions out into the world. UD students are very opinionated about anything going on with the Church, politics and society, and I love helping students articulate what they believe, no matter what feathers get ruffled.
If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be and why?
If I could live anywhere, I would want to sail a boat around the world. Circumnavigating the globe with a few close friends on a sailboat would allow me to live out my Walden dreams.
Caroline Anderson, Features Editor & Layout Editor
Senior Philosophy Major
What is your favorite thing about being the features editor?
I love how fun and interesting features can be: you never know what is coming in the next features article. It is also very visually interesting. We try to make the features article look different from any of the other sections of the newspaper for novelty’s sake.
If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be and why?
If I could live anywhere in the world, I would live in a little apartment right outside of the Vatican so that I could not only visit St. Peter’s everyday but also so that I can realistically marry a Swiss Guard.
Elizabeth Grant, Copy & Layout Editor
Senior English major with Music concentration
What is your favorite thing about being a Layout/Copy editor?
I am both a copy editor and a layout editor this year, and what I love about my job is that I get to help make the final tweaks so that The Cor Chronicle is the best publication that it can be!
What is your most random hobby?
My random hobby is planning in extreme detail trips that I have no concrete plans to take.
Vinny Pavese, Sports Editor
Senior Business Major
What is your favorite thing about being the sports editor?
I love to discuss sports with people and to be able to write stories about various topics is something I truly enjoy.
What is your favorite caffeinated beverage?
Probably a double shot of espresso!
Beatrice Ellison, Editor-in-Chief
Senior English and French Major
What is your favorite thing about being Editor in Chief?
As Editor-in-Chief of The Cor Chronicle, I love leading this Trojan Horse, or Pequod or whatever you call it, of student writers into the city of Troy (UD I guess). It’s super fun seeing students be passionate about what they do and I find it very meaningful to facilitate that.
What is your most random hobby?
My most random hobby is making all sorts of coffee and matcha beverages! I’ve made so many over the years, like a banana milk latte, black sesame seed matcha, and even a latte made to taste like Turkish delight. I still make fun drinks all the time, and I’ve even considered making a pop-up rival to the cap bar at Fall fest or something.
Anna Schwenk, Community Editor
Senior Economics Major
What is your favorite thing about being the community editor?
I love the fact that the community section isn’t super specific so we get a lot of different types of articles, covering people, events, clubs, or topics of interest of the writers.
What is your favorite caffeinated beverage?
A hot vanilla latte.
Viki Montilla, Arts and Culture Editor
Junior English Major
What is your favorite thing about being the arts and culture editor?
I’ve always loved art, in all its forms. Of course one of my favorite art expressions is through language. I love words way too much! And as for culture, I think it’s one of, if not the most important aspect of our society. I mean, who are we without our culture? I think it’s very important for our generation to know their culture around them and before them so they can know themselves better. And reading that in a newspaper it’s the best place to start. And coming to UD, of course.
What did you think of Nolan’s Odyssey?
I actually loved Nolan’s Odyssey so much! Now, of course I am upset at Nolan for making poor Odysseus eat the lotus flower, and for reducing him into a traumatized man instead of a “man of many ways,” but this is his interpretation. I argued a long time ago (in this very newspaper, actually) that a movie adaptation does not have to be exactly like the book in order to be great, or even a masterpiece. This is the case for Nolan’s Odyssey. The soundtrack, the performances, the picture–it’s all so beautiful.
Didi Salvosa, Copy Editor
Sophomore Psychology and Spanish Major
What is your favorite thing about being a Copy editor?
As copy editor, I love how I am able to read what our writers contribute across all of The Cor Chronicle sections before the edition is published. I view the opportunity as a fun sneak peek before we publish the paper!
What is your favorite caffeinated beverage?
My favorite caffeinated beverage is an iced chai with banana and salted caramel syrup. It reminds me of banana bread, and it’s a drink both comforting and refreshing to me!
Pia Baxter, News Editor
Sophomore English and Classical Philology Major
What is your favorite thing about being the news editor?
I like the News section of the Cor because many students depend on it being accurate for much of their knowledge of what’s going on around campus and for explanations of previous events or changes that they might have noticed but not understood at the time.
What is your favorite caffeinated beverage?
Definitely coffee because it’s both a necessity of life…ok, of my life…and it’s delicious.
Akio Pinedo, General Manager
Senior Computer Science Major
What is your favorite thing about being the Cor’s General Manager?
I love being able to digitally preserve The Cor Chronicle’s articles on our website… and being able to expand upon my answers on the site! (insert winking emoji)
What did you think of Nolan’s Odyssey?
I think that Nolan’s Odyssey was a good movie and a fantastic way to introduce modern audiences to mythology. The backlash it received for being too “westernized” was overblown; it’s an angsty action movie by Christopher Nolan.
Tessa Brubaker, Layout Editor
Senior Comparative Literary Traditions major with Music and Sacred Music concentrations
What is your favorite thing about being a Layout editor?
This is my first semester as a Layout Editor, and I’m looking forward to using my creativity to help design new and exciting editions each week. If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be and why? If I could live anywhere, I would live on a farm!
