Wearing the star on your helmet comes with a great sense of pride — and a legacy to live up to. From legends like Roger Staubach, Emmitt Smith and Troy Aikman to today’s stars like Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb, generations of Cowboys have helped shape that legacy. Now, Caleb Downs takes up the mantle.
Born Dec. 10, 2004, in Hoschton, Georgia, Downs comes from a family of athletes. His father, Gary Downs, played running back for the New York Giants, the Denver Broncos and the Atlanta Falcons. His older brother, Josh Downs, is currently a wide receiver for the Indianapolis Colts. Growing up, Downs had his sights set on one day playing on the biggest stage in sports. At Mill Creek High School, Downs began making a name for himself as an elite talent. By his senior year, he had received the USA Today’s Defensive Player of the Year award and ranked as the No. 1 safety prospect in the country. Downs was poised to take the next step at a top college program.
On July 27, 2022, Downs announced his decision to join legendary head coach Nick Saban at the University of Alabama. He arrived with his sights set on helping the Crimson Tide add another championship to Saban’s decorated career. In his first season, Downs recorded 107 total tackles and two interceptions across 14 games, looking poised to become a cornerstone of Alabama’s defense for years to come. Then, Saban announced his retirement.
With Saban stepping away, Downs entered the transfer portal in search of his next chapter. That search led him to The Ohio State University, where he would continue his college career as a Buckeye.
Downs joined a stacked Buckeye defense that included edge rusher Jack Sawyer and linebackers Sonny Styles, Arvell Reese and Cody Simon. He quickly made his presence felt, finishing the 2024 season with 82 total tackles, two interceptions and six pass breakups while earning unanimous All-American honors.
Ohio State entered the 2024 College Football Playoff as the No. 8 seed, but the Buckeyes quickly showed they were capable of going the distance. In the semifinals, the Buckeyes defeated Texas 28-14, with Downs delivering a game-sealing interception to help secure their spot in the National Championship.
The Buckeyes finished with a 34-23 victory over Notre Dame, ending the season at 14-2. Just two years into his college career, Downs was a national champion and had cemented himself as one of the best players in college football.
Downs and the Buckeyes looked poised to return to the national championship and bring home back-to-back titles. The Buckeyes entered the College Football Playoff at 12-1 as the No. 2 seed, with another championship still within reach.
That pursuit came to an abrupt end when Miami defeated Ohio State 24-14 in the Cotton Bowl quarterfinal, leaving the Buckeyes with a 12-2 record. With a national championship and three seasons of standout play on his résumé, Downs was ready for the next chapter. On Jan. 7, 2026, he declared for the NFL draft.
Downs traveled to Indianapolis for the NFL Scouting Combine, taking another step toward playing on football’s biggest stage. Indianapolis has hosted the event since 1987, with Lucas Oil Stadium, home of the Indianapolis Colts, serving as its current venue. With three seasons of college film for scouts to evaluate, Downs opted to skip the on-field workouts. He still attended the combine, meeting with NFL organizations and addressing the media as teams took a closer look at the player behind the tape.
Downs entered draft night with a résumé worthy of a first-round pick. The question was how early his name would be called. His Ohio State teammates came off the board quickly, with Arvell Reese going fifth overall to the Giants and Sonny Styles heading to Washington at No. 7. For Cowboys fans hoping to land Downs, watching division rivals add Buckeye talent only added to the suspense. Dallas entered the night holding the 12th overall pick, but the Giants stood ahead of them with another selection at No. 10. When New York selected Miami offensive lineman Francis Mauigoa, Downs was still on the board. The opportunity was there, and Dallas made its move.
The Cowboys sent the 12th overall pick and two fifth-round selections to the Miami Dolphins to move up one spot. With the 11th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, the Dallas Cowboys selected Caleb Downs.
Downs’ talent has never been in question, but his intelligence is what truly sets him apart. His ability to read offenses and recognize schemes makes him a key piece in the Cowboys’ effort to rebuild their defense. He arrived in Dallas with high expectations, and the challenge now is turning that potential into consistent success at the NFL level.
Those expectations will only grow as his career unfolds, but Downs has been preparing for this stage since he was a kid. Now, he has the opportunity to build his own legacy with a franchise whose history is filled with legends. Wearing the star comes with pride, but it also comes with responsibility. For Caleb Downs, that chapter is just beginning.
